Your Daily Guide

Good morning, Twin Cities! It’s Adam today. First off, thank you so much to everyone who has already become a City Cast Neighbor during our membership campaign. The folks who support us financially — and get all the great benefits of membership — keep the lights on for us.

We didn't quite hit our goal, but we're SUPER CLOSE. Because of that, we're extending the availability of our Twin Cities loon pennants for one more day. Becoming a Neighbor during our spring campaign is literally the only way to get your hands on one of these (I don't even get one – I convinced my partner to sign up so we could have one in our house).

Today’s Must-Know

Eyesore to Opportunity: Redevelopment at the CVS Midway

The empty lot where the reviled Midway CVS once stood is ripe for redevelopment. Minnesota United part-owner Bill McGuire (not to be confused with the volcanologist, footballer, or Olympic runner) announced plans to build an unspecified number of market-rate apartments and retail space at the site. [Star Tribune]

  • Private dollars, public prep: The city of St. Paul said in a statement that the St. Paul Port Authority will fund the relocation of power lines above the site to make way for construction. No additional public funding is being sought for the project. [City of St. Paul]
  • What gets built? Users on Reddit are speculating about what might be built at the site, debating whether it will be a typical 5-over-1 apartment building or something more ambitious to match nearby projects like the Spruce Tree Center or the planned hotel and sculpture garden at United Village. What would you want to see there? [Reddit]

Sounds Like a Walk in the Woods

French electroacoustic composer Félicia Atkinson weaves dreamy soundscapes from field recordings and poetry into music stirring quiet revelation. Opening is beloved Twin Cities bassist Liz Draper, reinvigorating her celebrated solo album Meno on upright bass. An evening that sounds like spring's exhale. Reserve your contemplative spot — only at Berlin.

What the Cities Are Talking About

'Zombie fish' in Lake Superior: Researchers are racing to figure out what's causing a growing number of trout from the deepest parts of Lake Superior to be severely underweight. The fish are so emaciated that one researcher said they look like they're suffering from a famine. [MPR News]

Bye bye, Bolstad: As the University of Minnesota is getting ready to sell the Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, golfers and other community members are petitioning to stop the sale. The U is moving forward though, and city officials in Falcon Heights are planning out zoning regulations for the area and figuring out how to build more housing with as little environmental impact as possible. [Star Tribune / MinnPost]

Roster reset: The Lynx are heading into next month's season opener with a heavily reshaped roster, returning just three players with playoff minutes after offseason departures. We spoke with Lynx beat reporter Andrew Dukowitz on the podcast, who said star Napheesa Collier is expected be out until June, but the team is excited about Olivia Miles, a rookie point guard who fits coach Cheryl Reeve’s system. Expectations are modest early, though there’s hope the Lynx can build momentum and make a playoff push once Collier returns. [🎧 City Cast Twin Cities]

Smells like spring: I know spring is finally here for real because today was the first day where I stepped outside and it smelled overwhelmingly like flowers. Minneapolis Institute of Art's incredibly popular "Art in Bloom" exhibit featuring hundreds of flower arrangements inspired by artwork is also open for its last day today. If you want to see some flowers without the crowds, you can always stroll through the Eloise Butler Wildflower Sanctuary, which recently opened for the season. [Minneapolis Institute of Art]

MPLS eyes data center pause: Minneapolis City Council members are considering a moratorium on new or expanded data centers as concerns grow over their environmental impacts. A vote is scheduled for May 21, giving the city time to see whether the state adopts its own regulations. [Star Tribune]
