What the Cities Are Talking About

Dangerous neighbor: Minneapolis resident David Moturi is suing the city and the previous owners of his home. Moturi was shot by neighbor John Sawchak after Minneapolis police failed to detain Sawchak despite a warrant for his arrest. Moturi alleges the previous homeowners broke state law by not disclosing Sawchak’s history of harassing the couple, which led to a restraining order. Moturi is suing the city for not arresting Sawchak sooner, and for ex-chief Brian O’Hara’s comment partially blaming Moturi for the shooting. [Star Tribune]

Rising temps and tempers: The Trace, a nonprofit newsroom focused on gun violence, reports Operation Metro Surge interfered with local violence interrupters’ work. Some workers reported being hesitant to respond to a scene, or left their job entirely, due to a fear of ICE. Violence interrupters are particularly concerned as we enter summer, what they call “trauma season.” [The Trace]

Lots of people on Target Field, with red letters spelling out "Twins." Two picnic tables are in the foreground, with tall buildings outside the stadium in the background.

Another kind of strike: Target Field’s concession workers say they’re ready to strike on June 22 after contract negotiations stalled over pay and healthcare. Members of United Here Local 17 say they make minimum wage and don’t get employer health insurance due to being seasonal workers. In response to the strike announcement, Delaware North, the venue manager, proposed a wage increase. The Twins are scheduled to play the Los Angeles Dodgers that Monday at the stadium. Mattress merger: Sleep Number, headquartered in downtown Minneapolis, has filed for bankruptcy to merge with Sleep Country Canada. I guess things haven’t been so good for Sleep Number, since they cut management roles by 21% and reported a quarterly loss of $393 million last year. [Bring Me The News]
