Under review: Minneapolis city officials are considering stripping Reign Event Center of its liquor license after nine people were injured in a shooting outside the club. Calls to 911 from Reign's address more than tripled from 30 in 2024 to upwards of 100 in 2025. New beds, but is it enough? As St. Paul's planned Aug. 5 clearing of the homeless encampment at Pig's Eye Park nears, Ramsey County has added 49 new shelter beds in the city. At a public hearing regarding homeless encampments on Wednesday, protesters criticized the city's plan for shutting down encampments without having enough space in shelters to offer residents an alternative. Reopening in sight: The U.S. Forest Service made the rare decision to completely close the Boundary Waters Canoe Area on July 14 amid raging wildfires. While fires are still burning in much of the BWCA, the eastern side near Lake Superior is relatively fire-free and expected to reopen to the public when the Forest Service gives the okay on July 29. Sentenced: Vance Boelter was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences plus 40 years in prison for the assassinations of former Speaker of the Minnesota House Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark Hortman and the shootings of state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette Hoffman. The Hoffmans and family members of the Hortmans gave emotional testimonies and addressed Boelter directly before the sentencing. [Star Tribune]

Searching for solutions: Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher held a meeting with parents and members of the Twin Cities Somali community to discuss gang violence among Somali youth. Some people at the event criticized Fletcher for singling out the Somali community, but the sheriff stood by his comments and argued that community-specific problems require community-specific solutions. Fletcher's goal of the meeting was to show community members how common gang activity is among the youth to try to get parents on board with brainstorming solutions. [Sahan Journal]
