Your Daily Guide

Hi, Twin Cities! It’s Adam today. If you didn't get out to early vote yet, that's OK! Personally, I'm planning on voting before work tomorrow, but early voting is still open today if you'd like to get it done. Our podcast host Sean documented his trip early voting last week, and it wasn't as much of a time saver as he hoped it would be.

Whatever you do, get to the polls before 8 p.m. tomorrow! 🫡

Today’s Must-Know

Tomorrow Is Election Day

In the lead-up to the midterms, we have been working hard to bring you in-depth interviews with as many candidates as possible on the City Cast Twin Cities podcast.

  • Hennepin County Commissioner, District 3: Voters in Downtown Minneapolis, Southwest Minneapolis, and St. Louis Park can tune into our interviews with challenger Abdihakim Ibrahim and incumbent Marion Greene.
  • Hennepin County Commissioner, District 2: Residents of North Minneapolis, Northeast Minneapolis, and the suburbs of Golden Valley, Medicine Lake, and Southeast Plymouth will choose between challenger Sharon El-Amin and incumbent Irene Fernando.
  • Ramsey County Commissioner, District 5: St. Paulites in West 7th, Downtown, Dayton's Bluff, Highland Park, and Mac-Groveland will decide between St. Paul City Council President Rebecca Noecker and state Rep. María Isa Pérez-Vega, who are both looking to leave their current elected positions to serve as a county commissioner.
  • Minneapolis School Board, At-Large: Four candidates are running for two open seats on the school board, and the whole city will decide on who gets in. Candidates Christin Crabtree, Michael Baskins, and Stephanie Johnson joined the podcast for a forum discussing issues of possible school closures, financial oversight, and how to recruit more students to the district. Incumbent Collin Beachy was not able to attend.
  • Minneapolis School Board, District 1: Voters of Northeast and Southeast Minneapolis will choose between incumbent Abdul Abdi and challenger Ben Lattimore for the District 1 seat on the school board. Both candidates joined a forum-style conversation on the podcast.
  • U.S. Senate and Hennepin County Attorney: We interviewed both U.S. Senate candidate Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan and Hennepin County Attorney candidate Cedrick Frazier prior to their Aug. 11 primary elections. Flanagan's opponent Michele Tafoya and Frazier's opponent Anders Folk did not reply to our requests for an interview.

Solve a Murder at the Science Museum

There’s been a murder at the Science Museum of Minnesota, and the detective is short on help. On Friday, Nov. 20 from 6 to 10 p.m., join the investigation: dust for fingerprints, analyze blood spatter, and grill five very questionable suspects after hours. No acting required, just bring your curiosity and a sharp eye. Tickets are $55, or $50 for members.

What the Cities Are Talking About

Safer sleeping: On Thursday, the Minneapolis City Council passed a measure that will make it legal for houseless people to sleep in their cars in designated parking lots that would be managed by nonprofits, churches, and other groups. The goal of the measure is to give people a safe place to sleep where they won't be ticketed and can be connected with other support services. [Star Tribune]

Thank you, Chef: Gardens of Salonica, a Greek restaurant that has been operating in Northeast Minneapolis for 36 years, announced that they will be closing next year. Owner Anna Christoforides will be retiring and said "now I get to live my life." Thank you for the years of great food, Anna, and enjoy your retirement! [Racket]

Local races: With one day to go before the midterms, local journalist and political expert Taylor Dahlin joined today's episode of the podcast to talk about the races she's watching. Tune in to hear why the county commissioner races are getting more coverage than usual and how to stay engaged with local politics after the election. [🎧 City Cast Twin Cities]

Cornell Seven's local impact: The Cornell Seven case, in which seven members of Cornell’s Chi Phi fraternity are accused of sexually assaulting a woman, sparked protests and calls for reform at universities across the country. Minnesota Daily campus reporter Kyra Deters joined today's episode of the podcast to talk about how she has seen the ripple effects of the Cornell Seven case play out on the U of M campus as both a student and a reporter. AI money in politics: The Star Tribune tracked campaign donations from employees of AI company Anthropic. Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan received the most money from AI employees, many of whom have voiced concerns about the speed of AI development and have sought more regulations on the industry. [Star Tribune]
